An Artists Home & Life: A Constant State of Wonder

While most people designate a corner of their home as their creative sanctuary, the world’s most famous artists dedicate their whole house to their craft.

Everyone has had that moment where they encounter a work of art so personally moving and awe-inspiring that it forever alters their perspective — and subsequently their life.

Such an encounter is followed up by the one and only question the mind can muster - what was the artist thinking, feeling, doing at the time they conceived this masterpiece?

It was Sir Marcel Duchamp who noted, “the most interesting thing about artists is how they live.” This observation reveals that an artist’s life, choices, and being are just as crucial and fascinating as their work.

Artists live in a constant state of wonder, finding beauty in everyday moments, and devoted to authentic self-expression. They understand that while art exists to reflect, interpret, and shape reality - it is life that provides the experiences, emotions, and inspiration that fuels artistic creation.

For artists, everyday is an opportunity not just to create beauty but to transform existence itself into a work of art. This mindful approach to living allows for exploration, creativity, and celebration of life.

Whether you are an established artist or someone who enjoys creative projects, you understand the importance of having a space devoted to your craft. It serves as a physical reminder of one’s commitment to craft and encourages setting aside time to create.

Art supplies, inspirational quotes, and anything that serves as personal inspiration – are just some elements incorporated into most people’s creative sanctuary but the world’s greatest artists?

They dedicated their whole house to their craft. Today these structures exist as museums offering insights into the lives of the greatest artists humanity has ever known.

In a world that often feels rushed and chaotic, finding peace through creativity can be a powerful way to nurture your mind and soul. Find your inspiration for an artist nook here:

CLAUDE MONET (IMPRESSIONISM) & GIVERNY, FRANCE

Oscar-Claude Monet was a French painter and founder of Impressionism who is seen as a key precursor to Modernism, especially in his attempts to paint nature as he perceived it.

During his long career, he was the most consistent and prolific practitioner of Impressionism's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions of nature, especially as applied to plein air (outdoor) landscape painting.

From 1883, Monet lived in Giverny, France where he purchased a house and property and began a vast landscaping project including the water-lily pond.

Monet's ambition to document the French countryside led to a method of painting the same scene many times so as to capture the changing of light and the passing of the seasons.

Frequently exhibited and successful during his lifetime, Monet's fame and popularity soared in the second half of the 20th century when he became one of the world's most famous painters and a source of inspiration for a burgeoning group of artists.

Claude Monet’s colorful house and famous water lily gardens in Giverny, France have since been preserved as Masion et Jardins de Claude Monet.

SALVADOR DALI (SURREALISM) & PORTLIGAT, SPAIN

Salvador Dali was a Spanish Surrealist artist renowned for his technical skill, precise draftsmanship, and the striking and bizarre images in his work.

Influenced by Impressionism and Renaissance masters, he was increasingly attracted to Cubism and Avant-Garde Art movements.

He moved closer to Surrealism in the late 1920s and joined the Surrealist group in 1929, soon becoming one of its leading exponents. His best-known work - The Persistence of Memory (August 1931).

Dalí's artistic repertoire included painting, sculpture, film, graphic arts, animation, fashion, and photography, at times in collaboration with other artists. He also wrote fiction, poetry, autobiography, essays, and criticism.

Major themes in his work include dreams, the subconscious, sexuality, religion, science and his closest personal relationships. To the dismay of those who held his work in high regard, and to the irritation of his critics, his eccentric and ostentatious public behavior often drew more attention than his artwork.

Salvador Dali’s whimsical, white sea shell, lobster-themed House Museum in Portlligat, Spain, was Dali’s home and studio.

The other major museum devoted to Dali’s work is the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg Florida, US.

FRIDA KAHLO (SURREALISM, MEXICAN MODERNISM) & COYOACAN, MEXICO CITY

Frida Kahlo’s vibrant blue home, the Museo Frida Kahlo in Coyoacán, Mexico City, is a powerful testament to her life and reflection of her passionate spirit.

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by nature and artifacts of Mexico.

Inspired by Mexico’s pop culture, she incorporated native folk art to explore questions of identity, gender, class, and race in Mexican society.

Her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and mixed realism with fantasy. She is also known for painting about her experience of chronic pain.

Kahlo's work as an artist remained relatively unknown until the late 1970s, when her work was rediscovered by art historians and political activists.

By the early 1990s, not only had she become a recognized figure in art history, but she was also regarded as an icon for Chicanos, feminist movement, and the LGBTQ+ Community.

Kahlo spent most of her childhood and adult life at La Casa Azul, her family home in Coyoacan, today known and open to the public as the Frida Kahlo Museum.

PABLO PICASSO(CUBISM)& ALIX-EN-PROVENCE, FRANCE

Pablo Picasso revolutionized art with Cubism—a style featuring fragmented, multi-perspective, and geometric forms—co-developed with Georges Braque.

Throughout his life, Pablo Picasso was known to live in Paris as well as several different places. But it was his Chateau of Vauvenarques near Aix-en-Provence, France where he spent his final years.

While Cubism was developed in Paris (1908–1914), it was heavily influenced by the structured, Cézanne-inspired landscapes of Provence.

Picasso is buried at the Château de Vauvenargues, located approximately 15 kilometers from Aix-en-Provence, alongside his wife Jacqueline Roque.

GEORGIA O’KEEFFEE (AMERICAN MODERNISM) & ABIQUIU, NEW MEXICO

Georgia O’Keeffee was an American Modernist painter and draftswoman whose career spanned seven decades and work remained largely independent of major art movements.

Called the "Mother of American modernism", O'Keeffe gained international recognition for her paintings of natural forms, particularly flowers, hills and desert-inspired landscapes, which were often drawn from and related to places and environments in which she lived.

The Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio is a historic house museum in Abiquiú, New Mexico. From 1943 until her death, this stark, beautiful home and studio was central to her work. Today this residence is part of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, which has sites in Santa Fe and Abiquiú, New Mexico.

ZAHA HADID (ARCHITECTURE) & LONDON

Zaha Hadid was an Iraqi and British architect, artist, and designer. She is recognized as a key figure in the architecture of the late-20th and early-21st centuries.

Her major works include the London Aquatics Center for 2012 Olympics, Broad Art Museum, Rome’s MAXXI Museum, and the Guangzhou Opera House.

In search of an alternative to traditional architectural drawing, and influenced by Supermatism and Russian Avant-Garde, Hadid adopted painting as a design tool and abstraction as a method to "re-investigate the aborted and untested experiments of Modernism to unveil new fields of building.

The Guardian described Hadid as the "Queen of Curves", who "liberated architectural geometry, giving it a whole new expressive identity".

Before her passing, Hadid lived and worked in London, often blending her living spaces with her art and design collections.

Her home was described as having a "fluid," "dynamic," and "curvaceous" style, filled with her own furniture designs and art, such as a homage to Malevich's Tektonik

WINSLOW HOMER (AMERICAN LANDSCAPES) & SCARBOROUGH, MAINE, US

Winslow Homer was an American landscape painter and illustrator, best known for his marine subjects.

He is considered one of the foremost painters of 19th-century America and a preeminent figure in American art.

Homer’s home and art studio is located in Prouts Neck, Scarborough, Maine. The artist lived and worked from this home from 1884 until his death in 1910.

Originally a carriage house, he transformed it into a secluded, rustic, and minimalist space to paint his famous ocean scenes.

The Portland Museum of Art acquired, restored, and offers tours of the studio.

The studio is known for its pine-paneled walls, a covered balcony, and a distinctive Medusa door knocker used to deter uninvited guests.

The Portland Museum of Art provides guided tours that allow visitors to see the space where he painted.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT (ARCHITECTURE) & OAK PARK, IL, US

Frank Lloyd Wright was an American Architect, designer, writer, and educator, designing over 1,000 structures in his 70 year creative period.

Wright played a key role in the architectural movements of the twentieth century, influencing architects worldwide through his works and mentoring hundreds of apprentices in his Taliesin Fellowship.

This philosophy was exemplified in Fallingwater (1935), which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture".

Frank Lloyd Wright’s primary home and studio (1889) is located in Oak Park, IL, serving as the birthplace of his Prairie style and American architecture.

This was his first home, featuring Shingle-style architecture, a central hearth, and an attached studio where he worked for 20 years.

OTHERWORLDLY DELIGHTS: CHIFFON, TULLE, ORGANZA, & MORE

For a sense of otherworldly delight, ethereal pieces such as chiffon, tulle, sheer organza, and frothy, cascading silks are the way to go.

Who could forget the 2014 CFDA Awards when Rihanna attended in a blush pink Adam Selman gown made of 230,000 Swarovski crystals, Dua Lipa’s sheer fish-net dress at the Barbie Movie Premiere, Or Florence Pugh’s transparent Valentino gown in enchanting lavender?

In 1962, sheerness first catapulted into the spotlight when Marilyn Monroe sang her famous ‘Happy Birthday, Mr. President’ performance. From there, stars like Jane Birkin and Cher kept the controversial look on trend throughout the ‘60s,‘70’s, and ‘80’s.

Then one sheer inspired moment normalized this daring style trend in the 1990’s for everyone, from fashionistas, actors, and everyday people! This moment dates to 1998 when Carrie Bradshaw wore a skin-colored DKNY frock on a date with Mr. Big in season one of Sex and the City.

DESIGNERS SPOTLIGHTS SHEER

Designers such as, Schiapareli, Jean Paul Gaultier, and John Galliano have all been known to dazzle the fashion world by featuring their own sheer creations in their runway shows.

Finding their fashion inspiration from the runways – celebrities, performers, and actors, alike – also play a large role in keeping the sheer trend alive. Because once a sheer styled look walks down the runways? Well, it’s bound to make an appearance or two on the red carpet(s) for all the world to see.

SHEER DELIGHT — AS WORN BY THE STARS

During Vogue World 2025, supermodel Heidi Klum wore a super sheer, short white Vivienne Westwood mini-dress.

For President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to the UK, the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton wore a blush-pink Bar jacket and tulle skirt by the former creative director of Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri with a matching hatr by British designer, Jess Collett. Finishing off the look? The late Queen Elizabeth II’s pearl choker and pearl drop earrings.

Natalie Portman was dressed in an ethereal white dress composed of tiers of sheer organza, straight from Dior’s resort 2026 collection. She paired the organic, floor-length dress with a pair of white strappy heels and a structured white coat.

IT’S SHEER ART HISTORY

Throughout history, fabric has served as a source of inspiration, joy, and self-expression for countless artists.

The greats? — They achieved the impossible, capturing the movement of transparent fabrics throughout their masterworks. The likes of William Adolfe Bouguereau, John Singer Sargent, and Auguste Renoir accomplished this because they appreciated and understood the nature of fabrics as more than an afterthought, but a vital element in their paintings.

Feeling inspired? Add some whimsy and intrigue to your wardrobe with these transparent must-haves.

CELEBRATE ALL THE LOVES OF YOUR LIFE THIS SAINT VALENTINES DAY

Sweep them off their feet with these incredible finds.

Ahh.. love. It’s the greatest thing that can happen to a human being… a fate so delightful and intense one wouldn’t wish it on their worst enemy. In just a week, people across the globe will go out of their way to express their love through cards, flowers, chocolates, and romantic gestures on all lovers day (aka: February 14th).

Despite what some may insist  — that Valentine’s Day is just a holiday created by the “Candy Companies” to move product —  this day is actually a Holy day. It was created to commemorate the acts of service, compassion, and miracles performed by a Christian martyr who lived during the Roman Empire.

The Roman Catholic Saint Valentine made his mark on the world when he performed secret ceremonies despite Emperor Claudius II’s ban on marriages for young men. Besides his numerous acts of compassion and service-hood, it was St. Valentine’s miraculous act of healing a jailor’s blind daughter that touched people’s hearts across the world.

In the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I officially declared February 14 as St. Valentine’s Day. But it wouldn’t be until the Middle Ages that February 14th would become synonymous with romantic love, which later led to traditions of courtly love. Poets like Geoffrey Chaucer and writers like Shakespeare romanticized the day, associating it with lovebirds and exchanging tokens of affection.

Valentine’s Day shouldn’t be restricted to just romantic love, but all the infinite forms love comes in— from the love of family members to your besties (aka: the gal-entines) to pal-entines to lovers to co-workers! So, this Valentine’s Day let’s celebrate all the ways love shows up in our lives and give a little something special to those who are responsible for it.

THE 2024 GRAMMYS HONOR THE CREME DE LA CREME OF MUSIC

Besides the spectacular performances from the likes of Dua Lipa to Olivia Rodrigo (and so many more) weaved throughout the ceremony — this year’s Grammy’s had it all!

The 66th Annual Grammy Awards honored the best recordings, compositions, and artists of the year (from October 1, 2022, to September 15, 2023), as chosen by the members of the Recording Academy.

On Sunday, we laughed with comedian, Trevor Noah who hosted music’s most electrifying night. We exclaimed with joy when diva icons, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion made surprise appearances. We were moved to tears watching legendary Joni Mitchell’s first ever live Grammy performance. We cheered when our favorite artists like SZA, Miley Cyrus, and BoyGenius won their Grammys.

We experienced all this and so much more! The more? Scroll below to witness the most glittering moments of music’s biggest night of the year below.

TRACEY CHAPMAN SANG HER HIT SONG ‘FAST CAR’ ALONGSIDE LUKE COMBS

Last year was a big one for “Fast Car,” but those of us who wished the Tracy Chapman original, from 1988, got as much attention as the Luke Combs version were delighted to see Chapman herself show up to sing her song with Combs at the 2024 Grammys. The crowd’s standing ovation was lengthy, and I can attest that the one at my house went on equally as long.

Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman had the audience on their feet (and reaching for tissues) with their performance of Chapman's "Fast Car." Combs' cover of the song also received a nomination for best country solo performance at this year's ceremony.

MILEY CYRUS WINS HER FIRST GRAMMY

And the Grammy for ‘Best Pop Solo Performance’ goes to… Miley Cyrus for ‘Flowers’! This moment became even more iconic when Cyrus asked Mariah Carey – who presented her with the trophy—to stand next to her, exclaiming, ‘This MC Is gonna stand by this MC," Cyrus said, adding, "this is just too iconic."

MILEY CYRUS PERFORMS HER HIT SONG, ‘FLOWERS’ IN A BOB MACKIR ARCHIVAL BEADED DRESS

Mackie says. “Every time I’ve ever seen her in anything that I’ve [designed], I’ve adored it because she loves to perform and get dressed up—you know that she’s loving every minute of it.” A huge fan of Mackie’s designs, Cyrus and her stylist, Bradley Kenneth, approached the designer about wearing something from his archives to the Grammys.

The swishy hemline, decadently beaded, silver moment of a dress was from Mackie’s 2002 collection, titled To Broadway with Love.  Keeping Cyrus’s choreography in mind, Mackie knew the dress was perfect for her. “She’s there to entertain,” says Mackie, while McFate added, “And God knows a little sparkle will do that.”

“It was a collection of fashions inspired by Broadway musicals,” says Mackie. “[Cyrus’s dress] was from a ‘Big Spender’ number. We had three girls in these little sexy fringe dresses.”

BILLIE EILISH AND HER BIG BROTHER FINNEAS PERFORM ‘WHAT WAS I MADE FOR?’

Billie Eilish and her big brother Finneas delivered a touching performance of their hit from the Barbie soundtrack. The song went on to win song of the year later in the night.

Elish channeled a vintage Barbie look for her Grammys performance as 1965 Poodle Parade Barbie.

What is this specific doll reference, you may be wondering? The 1965 Poodle Parade Barbie imagined Barbie in her latest campy role: A professional (and stylish) dog trainer, in which her accessory is her beloved white poodle.

The doll came dressed with a pink headscarf, green cocktail dress, diamond-checkered coat, and glamorous cat eye sunglasses—all of which Eilish matched perfectly for her Grammys performance.

The only thing the singer forwent, however, was the 1965 Barbie’s poodle-printed handbag. Because that would be overkill.

BEYONCÉ (IN COWBOY AESTHETIC) AND JAY-Z SHOWED UP

It’s Beyonce! The superstar attended the 2024 Grammys to support her husband, Jay Z, who received the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award and she brought the rodeo with her.

Beyonce wore a look from Louis Vuitton’s fall 2024 ready-to-wear collection created by Pharrell Williams.

The singer wore a custom Louis Vuitton jacket with the brand’s signature Damien check rendered in crystals and a matching skirt. She also wore diamond earrings and rings from Cartier.

Beyoncé added to her cowboy core-inspired outfit with a white cowboy hat by Stetson reminiscent of her “Renaissance” era.

Jay wore a Givenchy suit and their eldest daughter, Blue Ivy, wore a white, Vivienne Westwood dress with matching boots.

JAY-Z RECEIVES THE GLOBAL IMPACT AWARD WITH BLUE IVY BY HIS SIDE

Halfway through the show, Jay-Z received the 2nd annual Dr. Dre Global Impact Award alongside his 12-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter.

"Thank you very much. I used to say it was a sippy cup for Blue, but Blue's grown up now she doesn't take sippy cups," he began. "And she has her own Grammys." Blue smiled gamely throughout Jay-Z’s sweet and corny dad jokes in a custom Vivienne Westwood dress.

The first to receive the award was – you guessed it, Dr. Dre—last year.

LEGEND, JONI MITCHELL MOVES EVERYONE TO TEARS WITH HER FIRST EVER GRAMMY PERFORMANCE

Brandi Carlile introduced the legend, Joni Mitchell, reiterating the impact Mitchell had and still does on music stating,

“…She redefined the very purpose of a song to reflect the contents of a person's soul and before she took this leap, the popular song was observational. It was brilliant and influential, of course, but the exhilarating risk that we all now take by turning ourselves inside out for all the world to see started as far as I can tell with Joni Mitchell doing it first."

The "Big Yellow Taxi" singer, 80, then took the Grammys stage for the first time in her storied music career, performing "Both Sides Now."

Crystal chandeliers encircled Mitchell, who was seated on a throne, as she gave a heartfelt performance. Charlie as well as Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig joined the legend on stage. The performance brought the crowd to their feet for a standing ovation.

Mitchell's 10th Grammy win came Sunday in the best folk album category for Joni Mitchell at Newport.

While this was Mitchell’s first time performing at the Grammys, it wasn’t the first time she graced the Grammys red carpet.

She is a 10-time Grammy Award winner and has been nominated a total of 18 times.

ICON – CELINE DION MAKES AN APPEARANCE TO PRESENT GRAMMY FOR ‘ALBUM OF THE YEAR’

Surprise, Surprise! Celine Dion had the whole music industry on their feet when she made a surprise appearance to present the ‘Album of the Year’ award (won by Taylor Swift who became the first person to win the category four times).

"When I say I’m really happy to be here, I really mean it,” Dion told the adoring crowd.

Dion has been struggling with stiff-person syndrome, a neurological illness, since 2022, which only made her presence at the Grammys more powerful.

TAYLOR SWIFT BREAKS (yet another) RECORD BY BECOMING THE FIRST PERSON TO WIN THE GRAMMY FOR ‘ALBUM OF THE YEAR’ 4 TIMES

Is it any surprise that this superstar would break another record this grammy’s night by becoming the first artist to win 4 Grammys for ‘Album of the Year’?

Not only did she win the Grammy, but Swift made the album announcement of her brand-new album titled, ‘The Tortured Poets Department,’ while onstage accepting her 13th Grammy for best pop vocal album.

She kept it short and sweet saying, ‘I’m gonna go and post the cover right now backstage. Thank you. I love you. Thank you.’

GOLDEN GLOBES 2024: SEE HOW THE STARS SHINED

The 81st Golden Globes awards was a star-studded affair filled with fashion, television, and – thanks to this year’s host, comedian, and actor Jo Koy - lots of laughs.

Held at the iconic Beverly Hilton, the Golden Globes honor the best in film and American television produced in 2023.

This year’s appearances ranged from actors like Timothée Chalamet and Bradley Cooper to singer songwriter superstar Taylor Swift in custom Gucci (as her Eras Tour film competed (and lost) against Barbie in the newly minted award for “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement”).

We all tuned in to see the two biggest films of 2023 — Barbie and Oppenheimer— battle of who would receive the most globes.

With Barbie claiming nine globes and Oppenheimer receiving eight globes but also the most nominations of the year.

In the end, however, it was Oppenheimer who took the grand prize of the night – the award for Best Motion Picture with Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and director Christopher Nolan awarded their respective globes as well.

In television, both Succession and The Bear won out. Actors, Emma Stone and Natalie Portman, received Best Performance nods.

See what the stars wore to the 2023 Globes.
