Beyond the Exotic: Albania, the Balkans & the Western Imagination
Overview
Beyond the Exotic: Albania, the Balkans & the Western Imagination is a conceptual museum exhibition and integrated campaign examining how nineteenth- and early twentieth-century artists represented Albania and the broader Balkans during a period of growing European travel, diplomacy, archaeology, and artistic exploration.
Through paintings, prints, photography, illustrated travel books, textiles, maps, and archival materials, the exhibition explores how artistic representations shaped public perceptions of southeastern Europe. Rather than asking whether these images are simply accurate or inaccurate, the exhibition encourages visitors to consider how art both reflects and influences cultural understanding across time.
Blending historical scholarship with contemporary interpretation, the project invites audiences to think critically about travel, identity, representation, and the lasting influence of visual culture on the way places and people are remembered.

Responsibilities
For this conceptual exhibition campaign, I developed the project from initial research through creative execution, including:
Conceived the exhibition theme, narrative structure, and interpretive framework.
Researched nineteenth- and early twentieth-century artistic representations of Albania and the Balkans across painting, illustration, photography, travel literature, and material culture.
Developed the exhibition title, messaging, interpretive content, and curatorial narrative.
Designed the exhibition’s visual identity, typography system, editorial layouts, and environmental graphics.
Planned visitor engagement through gallery interpretation, educational programming, digital experiences, publications, and interactive installations.
Developed an integrated marketing campaign spanning museum advertising, editorial features, social media, print collateral, and exhibition communications.
Created a cohesive visual system adaptable across gallery spaces, publications, promotional materials, and digital platforms.
Reflection
This project challenged me to explore how museums can encourage thoughtful conversations about representation without reducing history to simple conclusions. Rather than presenting artworks as definitive portrayals of a culture, I wanted to examine how artistic images both reflected the perspectives of their time and shaped lasting public perceptions.
As someone with Albanian heritage, developing this exhibition allowed me to combine personal curiosity with historical research and creative strategy. It reinforced the importance of approaching cultural history with nuance—recognizing both the artistic significance of these works and the broader historical contexts in which they were created.
Ultimately, the project reflects my belief that museums are places not only for preserving objects, but for fostering dialogue, expanding perspectives, and encouraging visitors to reconsider familiar narratives through thoughtful interpretation.
